The ancient Egyptians were some of the first people to cultivate grains, and they probably ate a variety of breads and pastries. The most popular early Egyptian bread was called naan, which is still eaten today in India. Naan is a flatbread made from whole-wheat flour, water, salt, and oil. It’s often served with curry or other spices.
Other ancient Egyptian foods include khubz (a type of unleavened bread), baklava (a sweet pastry filled with chopped nuts), shawarma (a sandwich made of lamb or beef that’s rolled up in a flatbread), and ta’amunah (a pudding made from ground dates).
